Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana

On the 11th June 1984 the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (Association of Genuine Neapolitan Pizza) was founded.
A substantial group of Neapolitan master pizzaioli decided to join together to safeguard, protect and legitimize Neapolitan Pizza
After several projects and collaborative efforts between the Association, local and national political bodies in power at the time, Federico II University and CNR, in 2004 they managed to obtain the Procedural Guidelines for Neapolitan Pizza TSG. The aim of these guidelines was to guarantee protection of Neapolitan pizza as a speciality product at European level.
The rules imposed by the Procedural Guidelines govern both the production and handling of the dough base and also the selection of ingredients to be used as toppings.

In July 1998 the Associazione Pizzaioli Napoletani (Association of Neapolitan Pizza Chefs) was also founded, to support an age-old skill which at the time was perhaps undervalued. It was an ambitious and forward-thinking project which bore fruit on 7th December 2007, when UNESCO officially recognized the art of the Neapolitan pizza chef (“l’arte del pizzajoulo napoletano) as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

On 13th December 2016 UPSNUnione Pizzerie Storiche Napoletane – Le Centenarie (Union of Historical Neapolitan Pizzzerias – the Centenarians) was founded. Its members are among the oldest families in Naples to have dedicated generations to the art of pizza making, passing tradition on from father to son.
